About Us

We are a small group of volunteers dedicated to the upkeep of public footpaths and rights of way across Wem Parishes. This group page will be updated with pictures and information as work is completed. It would also be great to get feedback from the wider community on the state of our footpaths and public rights of way.

Wem was settled in Roman times. It boasts a castle mound behind the parish church – the wooden castle is long gone. Nearby is Soulton Hall, a Tudor country house. It is a 16th century architectural project by Sir Rowland Hill, the first Protestant Lord Mayor of London. Wem has been a Market Town since 1205 and has many historical connections:- Sir Thomas Adams, founder of the Grammar School, who became Lord Mayor of London (1646); ‘Hanging’ Judge Jefferies; John Astley, artist; William Hazlitt, essayist and literary critic and Henry Eckford for the development of the Sweet Pea.

These new walks are loosely based on a set of walks, designed and published several years ago, that have fallen into disrepair or have become obstructed. The Wem Parish Paths Partnership (Wem P3) volunteer group, with the help of Shropshire Council, has set about clearing and repairing the footpaths around Wem. These are the first six walks, others are being planned.

The various walks take you through fields and meadows, along the River Roden, to Tilley with its oak framed houses, to Ruewood Meadow Nature Reserve, Wem Moss and on a short train ride to Prees with a walk back to Wem along part of the Shropshire Way.
